Penrose also made a mathematical analysis of voting procedure at the United Nations and formulated a fairer way of voting, which he regarded as an âessential component in the mechanism of human civilisationâ.27
MAPW continued to campaign against nuclear weapons and this was given more urgency with the explosion of the first hydrogen bomb in 1954.
DOCTORS PROTEST ABOUT THE H-BOMB
On 1 March 1954 the first hydrogen bomb was exploded by the US at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands (the USSR did likewise in November 1955), an event which increased manâs destructive capacity many times. The development of the hydrogen bomb was MAPWâs main concern between 1953 and 195528 and an editorial on this topic in The Lancet stimulated a lively debate in the letters columns.29 A month previously Professor A. Haddow, President of MAPW, in a letter to The Times30 had issued a challenge to fellow scientists, as a direct result of the H-bomb explosion and the announcement that it was now possible to manufacture a âdirtyâ cobalt bomb. Haddow stated in his letter:
While the crisis is unlikely to be affected by the endeavour of any single individual today, such would not necessarily be so were the issues transferred under the aegis of the United Nations, to a concilium of world science, representing especially physics, chemistry, biology and medicine, representative also of their nationalities, yet supranational in outlook, of an authority transcending that of the politician, and with an unimpeachable primary loyalty to humanity as a whole.
